Design trends change much like the weather as style changes from year to year – even to season to season. Now 2025 is well and truly upon us, here we look at what might be in store for the next months. From Wabi-Sab to mixed metals, from bringing nature indoors to a sensory approach to textures, as well as ‘colour drenching, we look at the five best design trends for 2025 that are in vogue which any concerning homeowners will want to stay on top of this year.
Wabi-Sabi Japanese Design
Wabi-Sabi is a Japanese aesthetic philosophy that values the beauty of imperfection, authenticity, and naturalness.
This relaxed and calming interior design look begins with decluttering and focusing on only things which are necessary. Less is more in Wabi-Sabi.
Natural colours and fabrics that embrace this trend include focus on neutrals such as sage green, beige and warm grays that reflect the mountains, the lakes, the desert or the beach.
As much natural light as possible in this trend is key. Wabi-Sabi celebrates the movement of natural light and reminds us of how the colour temperature changes throughout the day and is very good for our health.
Mixed Metals
Mixing metals in a space does not just have to focus on the kitchen and bathroom, it can also be functional, beautiful and practical in the living room, but there are tricks to getting it right.
As a rule of thumb, it is best not to mix more than three different metals, for example you might consider one dominant colour but also consider pre-existing features that you will be keeping, ahead of a redesign.
Matt black is perfect for a dominant colour as it is amazing for providing contrast. You might want to use this on the cabinet hardware as well as the lighting fixtures for example, but you could consider pre-existing ‘fixed’ features such as your Lifton Home Lift in its light pewter colour and pull this colour through other items such as mirrors or picture frames or use it as an accent colour in accessories.
If you mix metals use them more than once throughout the room to really make it pop!
Bringing Nature Indoors
Natural materials and lush greenery or ‘biophilic’ design has been popular for several years as people yearn to be closer to nature. Indoor/Outdoor living is definitely still ‘in’ for 2025.
Using materials such as wood and natural stone is going to continue to be popular.
Bringing greens and browns into the home through upholstery and décor supports this trend by creating a calm and organic space. Delicate mixes and different hues of this colour palette are cosy and versatile and a further nod to nature.
A snake plant or fig, a woven bamboo basket, a natural stone fireplace or natural feature wall, all combine to add to the concept of bringing nature indoors.
Sensory Approach to Textures
Whether you are sprucing up your living room or revamping your bedroom, textures can make a space come alive.
Layering adds depth and dimension and creates zones that are inviting and full of personality.
Textures provide a balance that can be both dynamic and harmonious. Contrast is key, a pair of sleek glossy surfaces alongside a rougher surface such as a jute rug offers an interplay of smooth and rugged textures which is very effective.
And don’t forget about walls and ceilings! Something as simple as a textured wallpaper or paint, or even wood panelling creates an area of unexpected interest.
If you are not ready for big changes, start small. Textured throw blankets, a fake fur rug, velvet cushions, or a woven rug all invite touch and add dimension and layers. This sensory approach turns ordinary interiors into extraordinary spaces.
Colour Drenching
This trend overflows from 2024, but it is becoming more of a staple thing to do. It essentially means everything in one room is painted in the same colour. Colour drenching makes a room look more dramatic, impactful and opulent at the same time.
Colour drenching is not for someone who doesn’t like colour as it cannot be white! It must be a colour.
It is a big commitment in terms of painting and time, as can mean painting everything from your baseboards, trim, ceilings and walls all in one colour. It is extremely effective with dark or moody colours as it creates a beautiful intensity.
Colour Drenching eliminates contrast and instead brings with it a cocooned feeling and a cosy, tied-together vibe – ideal for a striking or unique entertaining space.
