A home lift from Lifton can bring a completely new dynamic to your home, helping to make life run just a little more smoothly. More and more customers in the UK and beyond are taking the initiative to install a domestic lift in their homes, thanks to modern lift options that are compact, stylish and can be introduced to the home with minimal fuss and disruption. Here we take a look at what is involved in installing a home lift from Lifton.
A range of home lifts to suit you and your home
If you are seeking to help improve accessibility within your home, perhaps for yourself or a loved one, then a Lifton home lift is an ideal solution for your house.
Struggle with the stairs no more and instead have complete peace of mind that your family members will not have to manage getting on and off stairlifts (or worry about you doing so!).
No one will require help moving between floors but will be able to do so independently. A home lift from Lifton can offer the perfect safe, reliable solution for everyone.
Unlike lifts you might find in corporate buildings, Lifton domestic lifts all use a bespoke self-supporting construction; meaning they do not require a separate pit or engine room and require no heavy machinery.
This in turn means they also do not require huge amounts of structural work to install. Instead, they can be installed in your home quickly and easily over just two days in most cases.
Before you arrange an initial visit
Moden home lifts, such as those from Lifton, are compact in size, meaning you will likely have options as to where in your home you would like to situate the lift. Perhaps you would like it to be in the empty space of your turning stairwell, or you might prefer to tuck it in a more discreet location to operate from a downstairs study to master bedroom perhaps.
With Lifton, our compact home lifts to choose from mean that you won’t have to give up lots of precious space in your home in order to incorporate a lift. A light, open interior space and a compact, stylishly designed Lifton home lift can go hand in hand. Simply have a think about what you most want from your lift and ideally where you would like to position it.

Technology has combined stunning design with practical features to make sure homeowners who are not as mobile can also enjoy stylish elegance in the home without compromising their living space or their own personal style.
The Process
- Initial home visit
Once you decide you are interested in having a lift installed, we will arrange for a member of the Lifton team to come and visit your home. During this visit, we can take into account your requirements and explain the different options that would suit you. We will then provide you with a quote that you can consider in your own time and decide if you would like to go ahead with an installation.
- The survey and placing an order
If you decide to go ahead and order a home lift from Lifton all you then need to do is call us to let us know you would like to proceed. We will then arrange an engineer’s visit for a full survey to be carried out at your home to ensure the installation can be completed as planned without any difficulties.
Once you have settled on the model of lift which is the best fit for your needs, all that remains to choose are the design options which help make the lift just right for you and the interiors of your home.
Select the finishes and colour you would like, to make sure the result is a lift that complements your home’s style. Additionally, all Lifton domestic lifts feature a transparent, curved panel that provides a modern, open feel which lets the light flood in, while maintaining safety and durability. Once your model and design options are agreed we will also take a deposit and agree with you a date for installation that is convenient for you.
- Preparatory work and installation
In most cases, whatever style of Lifton lift you choose, installation of our compact home lifts is quick and easy. It typically takes just a couple of days to install your new domestic lift, including all building work. Our highly trained Lifton installation team will carry out all the work to the highest standards, making sure not to leave you with any mess afterwards.
Planning permission
For most domestic lifts, you should not require planning permission as it is considered a ‘permitted development’, but it does depend on the type of lift. Your local planning authority will be able to advise you on whether planning permission is required. ‘Permitted Development’ grants you rights ‘to undertake certain types of work without the need to apply for planning permission’. However, you should certainly check with your local authority if your house is listed, in a conservation area or subject to any other restrictions.
Safety & Power cuts
All the Lifton Home Lifts use safety sensors fitted above and below the lift car which detect obstructions and smoothly stop the car if required. The lifts are also fitted with a full height ‘light curtain’ which acts as a sensor and ensures nothing crosses into or out of the lift as it travels. Your lift will also have obstruction detectors which ensure the lift cannot descend / ascend to the floor if an object is in its path.
As far as power cuts, the home lifts by Lifton include a battery back-up facility so in the event of a power cut the lift will simply travel to the lower level of the lift for you to exit. It will not work again until power is restored.
How do I prepare for the installation of the lift?
You may wonder how intrusive the process of installing your new lift will be, we recognise that it can be stressful having tradespeople in your home. Our installers would need to be able to access the rooms where the lift will be installed, first by cutting the aperture for the lift to travel upwards through.
Then moving on to removing the carpet or flooring in the upstairs room. The flooring is reserved for the ‘cap’ of the lift of course, such that when it is in the lower position, the floor is uninterrupted but for the rails on which the lift travels. To allow for this process we would need clear access to the areas of the rooms we are working in, but it is not the case that the whole room needs be emptied of furniture.
We hope this guide has helped to give customers a clear picture of the process involved in fitting a Lifton home lift in your home. We look forward to helping you select, install and enjoy the perfect home lift.
